What is Yearbook? (And Important Links)
Yearbook: What is it?
- Yearbook publishes the yearbook every year. Everything—cover to cover—is designed, created and produced by students in the class.
- Yearbook students choose the color palettes, font families and design template. They also take all of the non-portrait photos that are used in the book.
- They also design the cover, conduct all the interviews, and cover important events, like dances and assemblies.
- Student work within a professional production cycle, bringing pages from topic proposals to finished products.

Protections:
Enjoy the freedom of speech and of the press:
- It does not matter if the publication is funded by the school or not
- Limited by:
- obscenity
- libel/slander
- incitement (to commit illegal acts or disrupt the school day)
Official school publications include: newspaper, yearbook, journalism, or writing classes (and distributed to the student body for free or a fee)
Duties:
- Pupil editors:
- assign & edit content
Protections:
- shall not be dismissed, suspended, disciplined, reassigned, transferred or otherwise retaliated against solely for acting to protect pupil’s rights
Duties:
- supervise production of pupil staff
- maintain professional standards of journalism & English
- maintain the provisions of CA Educational Code 48907
Limitations:
- No prior restraint:
- prior restraint = requiring approval before printing
- Must provide justification without undue delay PRIOR to a limit to student expression
